Stephen Charles Gilbert
11/06/1951 – 10/06/203
Stephen passed away unexpectedly on October 6, 2023. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Cherie Appel Gilbert, son Matthew and his wife Ellen, grandsons Liam, Jacob and granddaughter Elsie Mae.
An avid gardener Steve prided himself on the bountiful harvest he and Cherie put in each year for the winter months.
Steve was a member of the Cherry Ridge Fishing Club being on the water was just one of his greatest joys. "Turtle Man" as many knew him, was often seen setting jugs or checking jugs for a big catch to show his grandsons. July 1st to October 31st was an anticipated time for Steve. Running the dogs with the Gardner Coyote Club was high on the list of Steve's favorite hobbies. There was always an adventure. Steve was a long-standing member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Post #1858 where he played Santa for many years, bringing great joy to the children. Steve was also a member of the Pennsylvania State Fox & Coyote Hunters Association Inc.
Stephen will be missed by many, a devoted husband, father, family man and friend. He was always there whenever he was needed, doing everything he could for whoever needed a hand.
He was employed by S.I Bailey Company until it closed and he retired from New Wave Corporation. He spent his retirement to the fullest working in his garden, cutting firewood, fishing, hunting, and his favorite past time was spending time with his nephew Andrew and helping the boys on the jobsite.
Stephen was the son of the late Jack Gilbert and Anna Mae Salak. He was also predeceased by sister Suzanna Theobald, brother Robert Gilbert, sister-in-law Jodi Gilbert, and brother-in-law John Korb. He is also survived by his sisters Dianna, husband Joe Fenwick, Bernadette, husband Chester O'Connell, Lourdes, husband Donald Rousseau, brothers James Gilbert, wife Donna, and Paul Gilbert, Aunt Katherine Schuman, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Visitation will be held at Arthur A Bryant Funeral Home on Monday October 16, 2023 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations to the Cherry Ridge Fishing Club. Donations can be sent to the Honesdale National Bank.
