Obituary of Shirley Westgate
Please share a memory of Shirley to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Shirley P. Westgate went to be with her savior on February 2, 2023 after a 10 year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. She was born on June 23, 1931, the daughter of Charles and Frances Burchell. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ralph.
She was a devoted homemaker and mother to three rambunctious boys, and in later years she treasured time spent with her grandchildren. After her sons were school age, she worked in various capacities in the offices of the Wayne County courthouse. She was a faithful and active member of First Presbyterian Church Honesdale, where she served as a deacon, participated in the Women's Circle bible study, and supported many other ministries. She was a member of the Cherry Ridge Grange. She was always ready to lend a hand.
She was a life-long avid reader and loved cross word puzzles. Her claim to fame in the kitchen was her legendary "Huckleberry Buckle." She always had a twinkle in her eye, and her smile was infectious. She would laugh until tears came when something, usually a story told by Ralph, struck her as funny. She enjoyed fishing, boating, and viewing the scenery at the family cottage on Lake Underwood. She always delighted in the antics and accomplishments of her sons and grandchildren.
She is survived by her son Randy (Meredith) of Lancaster, Pa; son Tim (Kathy) of Lakewood; son Chuck (Stephanie) of Thompson; grandchildren Evan, Adam, Aubrey, Rosie, Andrew, Anthony, Sarah, Abbi, and William; and great grandchildren Caroline, Wesley, Ian Ralph, and Asher.
The family expresses their deep and sincere thanks to the staff of Country Rest Home in Greenwood, DE, and Wayne Woodlands Manor, Waymart, PA for the wonderful love and care provided to Shirley.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations in Shirley's memory be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Shriners Hospitals for Children, or the women's bible studies at Grace Ridge Church, Honesdale.
A memorial service will be held at noon on February 10 at the Arthur Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 N. Main St., Honesdale, PA, with visitation at 11 AM. A private burial will be held at a later date.
