Obituary of Edna S, Goodman
Please share a memory of Edna to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edna Goodman, 93, died peacefully on December 12, 2016 at Bethany Village, where she had been a resident for the past two years. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband Charles ("Charlie") Goodman, also of Bethany Village.
Born February 14, 1923, in Honesdale, PA, to the late Stephen and Leda Wegst Spangenberg, she lived in Wayne County her entire life.
Edna graduated with the Honesdale High School Class of 1940 and spent the next several years as manager of Russell's Ice Cream on Main Street. Shortly before her marriage in 1948, she began work as a cashier at the "old A&P" on Sixth Street and then, after several years, became a stay-at-home mom active in the PTA and various school activities.
Eventually, anticipating a need to help pay for upcoming college expenses, Edna embarked on a later-life career as a dental assistant at the former Cherry Ridge Dental Center, located next door to the home she shared with her family for 57 years. Many local residents remember her kindness, compassion, gentle hand pats and encouragement as she shepherded children of all ages through their visits to the dentist. Her work ethic and her focus, both at home and on the job, was centered on doing things right and on helping people however she could.
For years in their retirement, Edna and Charlie traveled across the country for weeks at a time, visiting friends and family in Missouri, Oklahoma and Arizona and touring sights and landmarks along the way. An artist at heart, Edna enjoyed creating beautiful needlework – intricate crocheted pieces, complicated quilt squares, colorful afghans – and a bounty of crafts and decorations for every holiday.
In addition to husband Charlie, Edna is survived by son Reed and spouse Dr. Joel Goldstein of Sudbury, Massachusetts; son Dale and wife Jacqueline of McLoud, Oklahoma; granddaughter Angela Dorn and husband Rolf of Florida and their three children; brother Carl Spangenberg and wife Beatrice of Phoenix, Arizona; nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. She was pre-deceased by her beloved granddaughter Mary Elizabeth in 1993.
The family would like to thank the management and entire staff of Bethany Village and the Hospice of the Sacred Heart team for their compassion and wonderful care.
Calling hours for friends and family will be held on Friday, December 16, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 Main Street Honesdale, Pa 18431.
