Obituary of Melvin E. Appel

Melvin Edward Appel, 88, son of Bessie Davis Appel and George Appel, passed away peacefully at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Honesdale,Pa with daughters Cherie and Bonnie by his side on March 29, 2016. Preceding him in death were his brothers Robert Appel and Gordon Appel, his sisters: Erma Appel Simpson, Marietta Appel Kays, Alma Appel Davis, Lynette Appel Davis, Viola Appel Holl, Dorothy Appel Martin, his beloved wife Myrtle of 67 years, and his son Earl John.
Born on the 4th of March in 1927 in Girdland, he worked the family farm from age 14 until 1966. He later worked at both Cochecton Mills and CR Case & Sons before retiring as a landscaper. During retirement, he worked at Chroma Tube and also enjoyed gardening and landscaping the property with his cherished golden retriever Sandy at his side. Always ready for conversation, Melvin enjoyed company with a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.
Pop Appel will be missed by his two daughters and son in laws; Cherie Gilbert and her husband Stephen and Bonnie Korb and her husband John; daughter in law, Karen Appel; six grandchildren: Andrew Korb, Christina Korb Rust and her husband Joseph, Michael Korb and his wife Tara, Matthew Gilbert and his wife Ellen, Terry Appel and his wife Stephanie, and Toby Hessling Rephard. Nine great grandchildren; Kayla Evans, Alexandra and Andrea Korb, Jacob and Liam Gilbert, Sophia, Maxx, and Abigail Rust, Veda Catherine Korb, Ash Appel, and Logan and Mason Rephard; several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank Wayne Memorial Hospital, Wayne Woodlands Manor, his nurses, and caretakers. Special thanks to Kayla, Melanie, Jeanette, and Brian as you became members of our family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 4:00 pm in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home , 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale with Rev. Edward Erb officiating. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 2:00 pm until the time of the funeral. In accordance with his wishes there will be a picnic and celebration of his life in May at a time to be announced.
