Obituary of Donn Travis Shepard

Donn Travis Shepard, age 89, of Honesdale died Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center of Honesdale, PA. He is survived by his wife Florence Cranford Smith Shepard.
Donn was born November 14, 1925 in Springfield, Massachusetts and was the son of the late Levi Jeremiah and Celia Ann (Huyck) Shepard.
He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. He then attended Northeastern University and New England Institute of Anatomy receving a degree in mortuary science in 1949. Therefter he worked as a funeral director in Springfield, Mass and New York City. He was also an adjuster for Liberty Mutual. In 1978 he and his wife moved to the Honesdale area and operated the Brookside Country Store and Cabins in Dyberry Township. Donn was a past member of the board of directors for the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce, a past member of several MGB antique car clubs, and a past officer of New York State Boys Scouts of America. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW and was a Hunters' Ed and Trappers' Ed instructor with the Pa Game Commission.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Scott Travis Kavana and his wife Nancy of Myrtle Beach, SC; a daughter Lea Handler of Boston, Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Andrew Handler and his wife Danielle of Hopkinton, Massachusetts, Keith Handler of Newton, Massachusetts., and Elise Handler Berry and her husband, Michael of Newton, Massachusetts.
He was preceded in death by three children Dee, Cindy, and Brad Shepard, a twin brother Guy Shepard, and a son-in law James Handler.
A visitation will be held Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 PM in the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA .
Interment will be in the Spring in Massachusetts.
