Grace V. Short, age 94, of Honesdale died Thursday, October 9, 2014 at Wayne Woodlands Manor. She was married to the late Melvin Short, Sr. Grace was born June 25, 1920 in Forest City and was the daughter of the late Henry and Louisa (Corey) Bayless. She graduated from Forest City High School and went on to receive a BS Nursing degree at Presbyterian Hospital Nursing School and Marywood University. Grace then attended the University of Pennsylvania where she earned a degree as a Certified Public Health Nurse. She served for two years in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II with the 3rd Auxillary Surgical Group (MASH) in Europe. After the war she worked at Presbyterian Hospital in Newark, NJ as floor supervisor and for the Pennsylvania Department of Health as a Supervisor. Grace was a member of the initial Board of Directors of Human Resources Center, Inc, Honesdale, a member of the Board of Directors of Women's Health Services(Family Planning Center), and initial member of Wayne County Area on Aging Advisory Council. She was a past president of the Wayne County Mental Health / Mental Retardation Services Agency. Grace was the health education chairwoman for Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, a volunteer for the Other Shop at Wayne Memorial Hospital and assisted the Red Cross Bloodmobile. She delivered meals on wheels for the Bureau of Aging. Grace was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and served in the Women's Society, Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and youth leader. She also served as Nurse and Counselor at Sky Lake Methodist Church Camp. Grace enjoyed line dancing, painting, and gardening. She is survived by two sons: Robert DeWitt and his wife Mary Pat DeWitt,Hummelstown, Melvin Short, Jr and his wife Linda of Highland, NY; two daughters, Cheryn Buckingham and her husband Larry of Lakeville, Pa and Donna DeWitt of Honesdale; 11 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and two nieces. In keeping with her lifelong committment and service to public medicine, Grace chose to donate her remains to the Anatomical Gift Registry. A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 13, 2014 at 12:00 Noon in the Central United Methodist Church, Honesdale with the Rev. Jean Blackie officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to the Dessin Animal Shelter, Miller Drive, Honesdale, Pa 18431. Arrangements are attended by the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home 1228 Main Street Honesdale.
