Harold K. Bates, 87, of Honesdale, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014 in the Wayne Memorial Hospital after an illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce E. Garland Bates. Born January 23, 1927 in Dyberry, Wayne County, on the family farm, he was the son of the late Judson and Olive Brooks Bates. Harold worked on the family farm until he entered into military service. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Much of his military experience was aboard the US Kit-My on the Pacific Ocean. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Harold worked for several years as a carpenter. He worked for the Wayne Highlands School District as a maintenance custodian for many years until his retirement. He is survived by his children: William Bates and his wife Barb of Windsor, New York, Ronald Bates of Honesdale, and Sherry MacDavitt of Hawley; step-children: William Miller and Alice Miller, both of Scranton; two sister-in-laws: Doris Bates and Myrna Bates; a brother-in-law: Carl Grimm; ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a step-son: Barney Miller; and eight brothers and sisters: Norman, Delcye, Hilda, LaVerne, Alyce, Roland, Lester, and Richard; one granddaughter: Michelle Bates. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Arthur A. Bryant Funeral Home, 1228 North Main Street, Honesdale, PA 18431. Friends may visit on Monday, February 10, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Interment will be held in East Dyberry Cemetery, Honesdale, in the spring.
